Alcohol, also known as methyl alcohol (common name wood alcohol), formula CH3OH, formed in small quantities in the oxidation of methane; possibly emitted in large amounts from various species of vegetation.
Industry:Weather
Acidic gas, formula CH3SO3H, formed in the oxidation of dimethyl sulfide in the marine atmosphere. As a result of its low volatility it is mainly found in the liquid (aerosol) phase.
Industry:Weather
In the International System of Units, the fundamental unit of length; equal to 100 cm, 3. 2808399 ft, or 39. 370079 in.
Industry:Weather
1. The study of the physics, chemistry, and dynamics of the earth's atmosphere, including the related effects at the air–earth boundary over both land and the oceans. Fundamental topics include the composition, structure, and motion of the atmosphere. The goals ascribed to meteorology are the complete understanding and accurate prediction of atmospheric phenomena. See also atmospheric science; compare climatology. 2. In popular usage, the underlying science of weather and weather forecasting.
Industry:Weather
A person who is professionally employed in the study or practice of meteorology. It often refers to individuals who have completed the requirements for a college degree in meteorology or atmospheric science.
Industry:Weather
A meteorological office specified under International Civil Aviation Organization procedures to maintain watch over meteorological conditions within a defined area or along designated routes or portions thereof for the purpose of supplying meteorological information, in particular, meteorological warnings. A meteorological watch office may be an independent office or may be part of a main meteorological office (MMO) or dependent meteorological office. In the United States, this office is either a National Center for Environmental Prediction (an independent office) or a Warning and Forecast Office (an MMO).
Industry:Weather
Use of electronic means to transmit meteorological data.
Industry:Weather
An aircraft flight made for the specific purpose of obtaining weather information in a region inadequately served by surface observations (generally over the sea). Such flights are normally made to gather information about tropical storms.
Industry:Weather
Statement of observed meteorological conditions related to a specific time and location.
Industry:Weather
A letter, number, diagrammatic sign, or character used in weather records or on weather maps to indicate meteorological phenomena, both past and present, in a concise and accurate form. Symbols were first suggested and used by J. A. Lambert in 1771; his symbols included only clouds, rain, snow, fog, and thunder. The symbology pertaining to surface observations in the United States is contained in the “Manual of Surface Observations,” 7th ed. , 1955; that pertaining to the preparation of weather maps and weather analysis is contained in “Preparation of Weather Maps,” U. S. Weather Bureau, 1942, and “Weather Analysis Symbols,” U. S. Weather Bureau, 1950.
