Subtidal reefs formed by sabellaria spinulosa worms when they occur in very large numbers. Individual tubes built by the worms from sand or fine gravel can clump together to form solid reef structures which arise from the seabed sediment in mounds.

Swells coming from a great distance and forming large breakers on exposed coasts. They are best known on the islands of St. Helena and Ascension in the South Atlantic Ocean during the months from December to April, when they come from the northwest. = They arrive, often in calm weather, with practically no warning, and are dangerous to shipping. Rollers also occur at Fernando do Noronha, Tristan da Cunha, and on the coasts of West Africa, Peru, and the East Indies.
Industry:Earth science
Term derived from "picture element. " The smallest resolved area of information on an image display, representing an element from a data array.
Industry:Earth science
That portion of Earth's atmosphere above the planetary boundary layer in which the effect of Earth's surface friction on the air motion is negligible, and in which the air is usually treated (dynamically) as an ideal fluid. The base of the free atmosphere is usually taken as the geostrophic wind level. Also called free air.
Industry:Earth science
That portion of the Agulhas current north of 30 degrees along the east coast of Africa.
Industry:Earth science
That portion of the atmosphere from Earth's surface to the stratosphere; that is, the lowest 10 to 20 km of the atmosphere. The troposphere is characterized by decreasing temperature with height, appreciable vertical wind motion, appreciable water vapor content, and weather. Compare to stratosphere. Dynamically, the troposphere can be divided into the following layers: planetary boundary layer, which includes both the surface boundary layer and the Ekman layer, and the free atmosphere. See free atmosphere, Ekman layer, planetary boundary layer, and surface boundary layer.

The action of a deep-water wave on running into shoal water and beginning to be influenced by the bottom.
Industry:Earth science
The amount of geographical space covered by an object. e.g. The sediment footprint is the area over which suspended sediment settles out of the sediment plume.
