cyclothem

A series of beds deposited during a single sedimentary cycle of the type that prevailed during the Pennsylvanian period. The cyclothem, which ideally consists of 10 members (in western Illinois, the fifth member is a coal layer), indicates an unstable coastal environment in which marine submergence and emergence occurred. A cyclothem ranks as a formation in the scale of stratigraphic nomenclature.
