A professional who operates compressed-air or steam-driven machine to sharpen large drills, such as rock drills, used in construction, mining, quarrying, and well-drilling. Respnsibilities include:

  • Places cutting end of drill in forge to heat cutting edge to increase malleability.
  • Inserts heated drill into die space on machine.
  • Starts hammering action of die to shape cutting edge of drill.
  • Stops machine and removes edged drill.
  • Tempers drill by heating it in forge and quenching it in water, brine, or oil.
