A professional who tends equipment that polishes casein, plastic, or shell buttons. Respnsibilities include:

  • Places buttons in tumbling barrel filled with powdered pumice stone and water, or caustic soda solution.
  • Starts tumbling barrel revolving which causes abrasive to remove tool marks from buttons and to round edges.
  • Dumps buttons from tumbling barrel into open barrel and covers them with hot water.
  • Starts barrel revolving and places specified quantities of sulfuric and hydrochloric acids in barrel to polish buttons.
  • Places buttons in barrel of dry sawdust or ground corncobs to remove residue of acid and give luster to buttons.
  • May tend machines that tumble pearl buttons in bleaching solutions to lighten color.
