A professional who tufts yarn through backing material (loosely woven fabric or burlap) to fabricate carpets and rugs, using portable, electric-powered hooking device. Responsibilities include:

• Presses trigger of device to start reciprocating action of needle that punches yarn through material to form pile on rug surface.
• Guides device along stenciled outline on backing material to tuft design in rug according to specifications.
• Changes yarn color as specified by pattern.
• May insert missing tufts in rugs.
• May tuft rugs by hand, using hooked needle, and be designated hand rug hooker.
• When tufting samples, is known as sample maker.
