subtropical countercurrent

An eastward flowing narrow current in the center of a subtropical gyre where the general water movement is weakly westward. The three subtropical countercurrents found in the North Pacific at 20°–26°N between Hawaii and Asia extend to depths of at least 800 m and have speeds of 0. 15 m s−1. Other subtropical countercurrents have been reported north of the Hawaiian Ridge and in the Coral Sea.
