A standardized unit that uniquely identifies a material relating to a unit of measure or type of packaging. The International Article Number (EAN) is assigned by the manufacturer of the material. In this case, the EAN identifies the manufacturer uniquely. A company can assign EANs using "in-store" numbering techniques known only to the company. The equivalent of the EAN in America is the Universal Product Code (UPC).
