In sexually reproducing organisms, a species is a group of genetically related organisms, usually similar in physical appearance, that actually or potentially interbreed and are reproductively isolated from other groups. In microbiology, a species is a collection of closely related strains of organisms sufficiently different from all other strains to be recognised as a distinct unit.
